What is Bora-Care®?
Bora-care is a minimally toxic blend of glycols in combination with a borate salt that is applied directly to the structure itself instead of the soil surrounding the structure. Bora-Care then penetrates the wood, protecting it throughout. Because the active ingredient in Bora-Care is a mineral salt, it doesn't break down over time, so it remains in the wood for the life of the wood, providing residual protection. By keeping the wood sealed or protected from moisture as in the wall voids of your home, you eliminate the need for retreatment. Soil treatments are not only more difficult to apply; they lose their effectiveness over time. Then a costly retreatment becomes necessary. Unlike soil treatments, Bora-Care is not pumped into the ground and poses no threat to lakes, rivers, aquifers or the environment. Bora-Care can even be used on lakeside homes where soil termiticides may be prohibited.
Bora-Care prevents and eliminates:
- Drywood termites
- Subterranean termites
- Formosan termites
- Carpenter ants
- Powderpost beetles
- Old house borers
- PLUS: Bora-Care will kill and prevent wood-decay fungi and algae
Builders and homeowners should request Bora-Care for the termite pretreatment of their new homes. Bora-Care replaces old-style soil termiticides which are pumped into the ground under and around the house. Liquid termiticides can break down in just a few years (Mulrooney et al, 2006). Bora-Care eliminates treated wood as a food source for termites. And studies show that termites can't tube over Bora-Care treated wood. (Amburgey,T.H. and William, L.H. 2001 Mississippi State University)
Bora-Care is also ideal for eliminating existing infestations. We can treat all accessible wood wherever termite infestations exist wall voids can be injected with high pressure mist or foam. They can also treat crawl spaces or any other areas with infested wood.
- Builders are saving a full day of cycle time by switching to Bora-Care pretreats.
Bora-Care eliminates the need to coordinate schedules with cement companies and pest management professionals (PMPs). Bora-Care can be applied during the dried-in phase of construction.
- Bora-Care eliminates weather delays.
Traditional soil treatments require application to dry ground after the footers are dug. Bora-Care is applied directly to the wood in a two-foot barrier on the walls, subfloor, sill plates and piers. Weather is simply not a factor.
- Bora-Care eliminates the need for crews to leave the job site.
In traditional soil pretreatments, workers are required by law to leave the site during application and stay away until the application is completed. With Bora-Care, your crew can keep right on working.
- HUD's change in policy provides alternatives to builders.
In January 1999, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) changed its 99-A form to allow direct wood pretreatment of Bora-Care as a primary tool against termites in new home construction.
- Efficacy tests show proven results.
Over a ten-year period, research from an ongoing study at the Harrison Experimental Forest and Mississippi State University's Forest Products laboratory proved wood treated with Bora-Care repelled termite attacks and prevented subterranean termites from tubing over wood.
- Treatments near water are no longer a concern.
With soil treatments, there is the concern of chemicals leaching into a nearby water source. When you pretreat the wood, that's ALL you treat.
- A better pretreatment.
Bora-Care is gaining widespread use in the environmentally conscious pest management industry. Bora-Care provides superior protection against virtually all wood-destroying insects including subterranean termites, Formosan termites, carpenter ants, old house borers and power post beetles. It also prevents and controls wood decay fungi.
- Toxicity is a rising concern among homeowners.
With traditional soil treatments, 300-500 gallons of pesticides are pumped into the ground under and around the home. Bora-Care is a low odor termiticide that is applied directly to the wood answering the concerns of homeowners who are demanding less-toxic alternatives.
- Building code compliance.
The National Evaluation Service Committee found that Bora-Care complies with or is a suitable alternative to that specified in the 2000 International Building Code© with 2001 supplement.
- Excavation and landscaping do not affect the pretreatment.
Leaky water lines, improper drainage and even the landscaping process can break the soil termiticide barrier, rendering soil pretreatments ineffective by the time the house is complete. With Bora-Care, you're treating the wood, and once again, a problem is eliminated.
